A Haunting At Elvaston Castle

History

The full history of the Elvaston Estate can be traced back to the 11th Century and earlier. It's thought that the some members of the family were involved in the infamous Hell Fire Club. In the 'Boudoir' there are stairs up to the Valet's Quarters - it's also speculated that this may have been a handy way for the masters of the house to sneak up to the servant's quarters. The Anselin family were lords of the manor then the Bardolphs before it was granted to Sir Walter Blount in 1420. The estate then passed through several families until it came into the hands of the Stanhope family. John Stanhope of Elvaston and Shelford was knighted in 1603. He died in 1610 and his elaborate tomb can still be seen at Elvaston Church. During the Civil War Sir John Gell led his troops of roundheads against Elvaston, they ransacked the manor and stormed the church, thrusting swords into the family coffins. Although Sir John's tomb was restored it still shows some of the original damage as does the wall of the church where you can still see the marks left by Musket balls. Charles Stanhope, the 3rd Earl was a popular man and known as quite a character. He carried out the work on the house making it the house we see today, including adding the gothic facades, a new Great Hall to the west and a new wing to the North West. Charles's eldest son, The Fourth Earl of Harrington, Viscount Petersham inherited the title and estate in 1829 when he was nearly 50. He was renowned for his stylish dress, he was tall and handsome and was well known for his charming personality and way with the ladies. He married in 1831, Maria Foote, a Covent Garden actress 17 years younger than him. Their affair had caused a lot of gossip in London and Derbyshire and was frowned upon by the previous Earl and other members of the family. The couple moved into Elvaston shortly after their wedding.

After this the Earl wouldn't let Maria out of the grounds or let visitors in - so strong was his love and obsession for his wife. He set about creating a beautiful oasis for himself and his wife, as a 'shrine to their undying passion', he employed the William Barron to design and create the amazing gardens. Leicester Stanhope succeeded his brother as 5th Earl followed in the family tradition and went into the army and political life. In 1823 he went to Missolonghi in Greece. Lord Byron joined him but they didn't get on. Even so, after Byron's death, it was Leicester who brought his body and papers back to England. Leicester died in 1862 and was succeeded by his 16 year old son, Seymour, who only survived for 4 more years. The title then passed to his cousin Charles (the son of Fitzroy Stanhope) who was in his late 50's. He was addicted to playing and making violins.

Paranormal Activity

The 9th Earl, Dudley Stanhope was known as 'Old Whiskers' because of his busy white beard. He was a popular man and was once described as 'the best loved man in the Midlands'. He loved horses and when he died he left instructions in his will that his hounds were to hunt on the first suitable day after his death. When they were let out they ran straight to the tree (directly next to the Earl's grave) and refused to leave. The hunt was called off. The ghost of a white/grey lady has frequently been seen looking through a window, rocking as if sitting on a rocking chair. A scullery maid has been seen in various rooms of the castle, particularly in the kitchen - she allegedly became pregnant by a friend of the Earl of Harrington and committed suicide. What sounded like raindrops have been heard in the kitchen, though no water was falling at the time. The ghost of a man has been seen in the upper floor atrium. He's thought to be Jim Booth, the old gamekeeper.

Owlpen Manor Ghosts

History

This stone manor house, church and mill in Gloucestershire was built in the 16th century as a private residence but deeds go back to 1210. Queen Margaret of Anjou, wife of Henry VI stayed at Owlpen in 1471 and spent her last happy night before her defeat, exile and eventual widowhood. There are some reports of a 'hooded figure' or 'Black Monk' who is said to haunt Owlpen. Some say he is Bartholomew de Olpenne whose family owned the manor in the 1100s, and who was walled up and starved to death in the manor. His bones were found but apparently crumbled to dust when the space came to light. Owlpen Manor was the home to refugee children who had been removed from major UK cities during WWII.

Paranormal Activity

A grey lady clad in a fur-trimmed gown, steeple hat and wimple, perhaps Queen Margaret is reported to haunt the house where she spent her last night. One ghost is reportedly a mischievous child who is said to run up and down the back stairs, disturbing the sleep of the guests, and moving objects in the house. The ghost of a wizard and Alchemist who was lord of the manor in Georgian times apparently stalks the attic floor of the 1616 wing. The face of the small child has been seen on a photograph taken when the house was empty. Visitors report strange and unexplained sights, sounds and even scents.

The world is filled with so many things that defy explanation. Since the beginning of time there have been stories of ghosts and hauntings. From the haunted castles of the United Kingdom to haunted houses in the United States the stories are too many to be ignored. The number of locations around the world said to be haunted by a ghost (or ghosts) is almost infinite. Virtually every city, town, battlefield, or famous building has its associated ghosts and any attempt to describe them all would be futile.

Haunted houses are often seen as being inhabited by spirits of deceased who may have been former residents or were familiar with the property. Supernatural activity inside homes is said to be mainly associated with violent or tragic events in the building's past such as murder, accidental death, or suicide—sometimes in the recent or ancient past.

In More Haunted Houses Around The World, you will be offered hundreds of opportunities to enter the world of the paranormal. You will be presented with complete profiles of Haunted Houses, Haunted Hotels, Haunted Castles, Poltergeists, and information that will assist you in investigating the world of ghosts.

Are you brave enough to seek out a ghost? Read through this book and decide for yourself.

More Haunted Houses Around The World is a sequel to the highly successful Haunted Houses Around The World.

"Paranormal World": Add to Book Collection

A Review Of My Book Paranormal World (Hardback / eBook) By Autumnforest On The Blog Ghost Hunting Theories

This is a serious nonfiction book about all things paranormal. I'm keeping it as a reference guide but it's an enthralling read. If you're like me and ghosts are your thing but that doesn't preclude you from seeking info about all things paranormal including Bermuda Triangle, Bigfoot, Werewolves, UFOs and more, then this is your book.

I was pleased too that added in the end of the ghost stories were tips on how to hunt. What a great idea! It comes in hardback and Nook/Kindle, but honestly I love having the hardback because it's awesome on my shelf and I can grab it up and read about any subject any time I want to. It's broken up into fun easy to read portions so you can just read about one haunt or one incident and then go back later when you have time. Yes, we are all highly distracted these days.

This book is a keeper and reader and re-reader. Let me tell you, I'm very picky what gets to stay on my bookshelf. It has to be something I will refer to often. The last time I added a book to stay on the shelves was a year ago, so I am not a hoarder.

One thing we all know about me is that I like to ride around in the paranormal world, now I can also read about it.

Phantom Hitchhikers

Phantom Hitchhikers: The Phantom Hitchhiker is a well-known and widespread ghost story. Reports of Phantom Hitchhikers (or other vehicle passengers, such as taxi cab or bus passengers) are reported from around the world, but seem to be most common to the United States. It most cases the legend runs like this:

A man is driving along a lonely back road late at night. He suddenly spots a woman, often dressed in white, standing at the side of the road. The man pulls over and offers to give the woman a lift. The woman accepts, and it just so happens her destination is the same town the man is heading to. The man then offers to drive the woman home. Along the way he may give her his coat, especially if it has been raining and the woman is wet. The woman is usually very beautiful, but very quiet and withdrawn and barely says another word. As they arrive at the woman’s home, the man turns to look at her and is bewildered to find she has vanished. Undaunted he continues to the address given. There he speaks to the residents of the house and is amazed to hear the woman was killed on this same night some time ago. The spot where the man picked her up was the location of her murder or fatal accident. If the man then goes to visit her grave, he will find his coat (if he had given it to her) draped across the tombstone.

There are many variations to this story with the details usually depending on the region. In Japan, for example, there are many stories of phantom taxicab riders. Hitchhikers are not the only phantoms reported. Ghost ships, cars, trains, monks, nuns, and animals have been reported the world over. Phantom travelers and vehicles usually only appear for a short time and vanish once a specific location has been reached. Most haunt only a specific area and appear periodically. In many cases the phantoms are harbingers of some sort of disaster or tragedy.

Do Stones Absorb Memories? example ...Ft. Monroe, Virginia

Many times the residue of misdeeds and human drama are imprinted upon the stone face, making it possible to playback visions of the past, what we know as hauntings. Such is the case for Ft. Monroe, Virginia, where the infamous and the innocent are found.

This moated heptagonal stone fort faces the Chesapeake Bay on three sides, the water making escape remote and the isolation of its prisoners complete. It’s lonely casemates held one of the most illustrious prisoners of the Civil War, the President of the Confederate States, Jefferson Davis. Brought here in shackles after the war, Davis slowly grew weak within its walls. His wife, Varina, followed him here and pleaded to have him removed from the cell to a private apartment to die in peace. Both of their ghosts can be found at Ft. Monroe still, Davis in his cell and Varina is sometimes found gazing from a bedroom window towards her husband’s cell.

Their imprints of dreams unrealized and the reality of war make their shades onstant companions to the grief left behind. Other political figures make appearances too; the ghosts of Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant roam Old Quarters No. 1. Edgar Allen Poe, known as Edgar A. Perry before selling his enlistment in 1829, served four months at Ft. Monroe. While here, he wrote, “The Cask of Amontillado,” based on a ghost story of a Virginian military man walled up inside an empty stone building (see, I told you stone had long memories.) Visiting the area a month before his death, Poe read poetry on the veranda of a nearby hotel. After his death, he has been believed to have been seen in his former barracks, which is now located at Building #5.

What’s a good haunting without a good love story? Camille Kirtz, or the “Light Lady,” was murdered by her husband on Matthew Lane within the fort. While meeting her French lover, Camille’s secret was discovered by her much older husband. Hot-blooded and fast-acting, Camille’s husband shot at the pair, intending to wound the man but killing his wife instead. The Frenchman ran off and Camille now wanders “Ghost Alley” and a nearby copse of oak trees searching for her lover in vain.

She has been seen many times since the Civil War as a radiant mist in the form of a woman. Children have also found a home within these walls, serious illness was a fact of life in the early days of our nation, and many children did not live to see their tenth birthdays. Their innocent spirits are often trapped within the walls that sheltered them in life, as they unknowingly continue their journey after death. Two small boys have been reported at the fort, one in the upstairs of an old house next to the moat wall and the other in the basement of an enlisted man’s home. The latter child sometimes seeks out other children to play with when they visit the house, ghosts get lonely too…

The Tower Of London Ghosts

The Tower of London is known to be one of the most haunted places in the world. The Tower has an extensive history that’s filled with horror and blood. There have been hundreds of brutal executions held at the Tower of London during its 900 years of existence, including the gruesome beheadings of prominent political figures and noble ladies. Countless prisoners were also held inside the Bloody Tower and suffered from horrific torture and “unspeakable acts”.

Even children were killed in the Bloody Tower. In 1483, Edward IV died unexpectedly, and his young, twelve year old son, Edward V was set to inherit the throne. Unfortunately, his uncle, the Duke of Gloucester received permission from Parliament to ascend the throne himself. Edward V and his younger brother, Richard, mysteriously disappeared shortly after and were never heard from again. All though child mortality at the time was high, the young princes both disappeared at the same time. It was rumored that their uncle had them killed (or killed them himself) in order to secure his spot on the throne. In 1674, small skeletal remains were found, and recent testing has found them to be the remains of both humans and animals. Were the young princes held prisoner with their pets? Or perhaps buried along with dead animals? We may never know.

Nevertheless, there have been sightings of two ghostly boys over the centuries. Later in the fifteenth century, after they [the princes] disappeared, guards reportedly saw the ghosts of two boys in the Bloody Tower. The boys appeared to be wearing white nightgowns and they were moving down the stairs with “frightened” looks on their faces. They were holding on to each other and eventually faded away. Other sightings of the two ghostly princes have been reported over the centuries, and they’re all similar — the boys appear frightened and saddened, and when the observer tries to comfort them, they fade away.

Another popular ghost that haunts the Tower of London is that of Anne Boleyn. She was accused of “infidelity”, and there were also rumors of her being a “witch”. Her husband, King Henry VIII had a bad habit of either divorcing his wives or killing them, ordered her to be beheaded. She was beheaded on May 19, 1536, and to this day she can still be spotted gliding through the Tower with her head tucked under her arm. There are also reports of her leading a ghostly procession of other noble Ladies and Lords down the Chapel Royal aisle.

Catherine Howard was another one of King Henry VIII’s wives that was beheaded. She was supposedly in love with a man named Thomas Culpepper, who was also executed right before she was. Her last words were allegedly, “I die a queen, but would rather die the wife of Culpepper." She was only around 18-21 when she was killed, and it’s said that she lives on still in the Tower of London. Unlike Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard’s ghost appears in the likeness of her human form — the head is where it’s supposed to be.

Many other nobles were tortured and executed in the Tower of London over the last several centuries. The Tower is one of the hot spots for tourists visiting London. Everyone loves a good ghost story, and every year people flock to the Tower hoping to get a glimpse of a famous ghost or two. Paranormal and psychic investigations have also been undertaken at the Tower of London. Hopefully someday these restless spirits can finally find some peace.

Intelligent Hauntings

Intelligent Hauntings are the type of haunting that people usually think of when they think of a haunting. In an intelligent haunting, the entity is aware of its surroundings and interacts with the present. These hauntings are considered to be intelligent because communication with the living usually occurs. This ghost is best described as the spirit of a person who once lived and has stayed behind in our world instead of "crossing over" or "going into the light" to get to the other side. This sometimes happens in the case of murder, a traumatic event or if there is some unfinished business in the person's life. If these things happen, the spirit may be unable to or may even refuse to cross over. In some cases, the spirit may not even realize it's dead. This can happen if the person died very suddenly or unexpectedly.

The spirit will usually manifest itself in physical ways like slamming, opening and unlocking doors and/or windows; weird sounds, disembodied voices, disturbance of electrical devices, cold chills and a strong presence like the feeling like you're being watched or the hair on the back of your neck standing up, goosebumps, etc. Sometimes these spirits will hide things, move stuff around, turn things on and off or do other annoying things like a child looking for attention. These are examples of ghosts trying to get noticed so it can communicate from the other side. The spirit might need help to cross over or maybe it needs to take care of some unfinished business. Maybe it needs to deliver a message from the other side or just wants to watch over loved ones. In some cases, the spirit may be afraid of death and moving on to a new world. It has also been documented that the spirit may just be lonely and want some company. In some cases, as has been my personal experience, a loved one will visit in dreams and visions, especially right before or after sleep when we are most open to contact. I remember asking my father a question a few days after he passed away and he answered it in a dream that same night.

Believe it or not, it's fairly common to actually see a ghostly loved one. It's most common for ghosts to materialize between the hours of 11pm and 4am. This time period seems to be the easiest time for entities to manifest themselves because it's darker between those hours. Most spirits aren't strong enough to show themselves during the daylight because it takes too much energy. It's similar to turning on a light in the daylight; you can hardly see it and it's pretty much not worth the effort. This is how spirits work as well. If they use too much energy during the day they will be too weak to show themselves at night.

These spirits can be benevolent or mischievous, depending on the reason they're haunting a location. Perhaps they used to live there and they want you to leave. If they discover that someone can see them, they might decide they want to stick around. In some cases, there might be some kind of object or keepsake they are are emotionally attached to and want to be close to. They could also may be looking for something or someone. Sometimes the spirit may not be willing to accept that they're dead.

When people die, their spirits keep the same personality they had while they were living. Negative spirits are usually people who were angry and bitter in life. If the spirit was a kind and caring person, the entity will most likely hang onto those qualities in the afterlife. Negative spirits can be frightening, and in very rare cases they have been able to harm the living, but that is generally not the case. It is much more common to hear of an encounter with a positive spirit than with a negative one.

There are many spirits remaining in our world who have left behind relatives and loved ones and don't want to leave. It's possible they feel they can't leave until they finish a certain task or deliver a certain message. They may not rest because they suffered some injustice and want to help solve the mystery before they go. Sometimes they just want to see their children grow up.

Overall, knowing that some spirits hang around is actually kind of sad. Although we might think it's cool and exciting to encounter a ghost, we have to remember that many spirits are confused about what has happened to them and may not even know they're dead. Alot of them died suddenly or traumatically. Others cling to the life they know and are afraid to let go and move on to something new.

These ghosts frequently need help to be convinced that they don't belong here anymore. They aren't demons and don't need to be exorcised. Most likely they just seek direction to find where they should go. They need to be made to understand that there's more for them on the other side than there is here. It's possible to help them by simply talking to them or maybe calling in a priest of minister to pray for them.
